When it comes to attracting and hosting major international sport events, it has proved to be a good year for Copenhagen.

In the past 12 months, the Danish capital has won the bid to host the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships and LGBTQ+ event Eurogames, just as it has hosted the European Short Course Swimming Championships and is getting ready to welcome the world’s best ice hockey players for the 2018 Ice Hockey World Championship.
In a nod to Copenhagen’s achievements on the international sports scene, global sports market intelligence provider Sportcal has given Copenhagen an 8th place in its Global Sports Cities Index, which ranks the best sports cities in the world.
In the latest edition of the index, Sportcal has ranked 582 cities around the world, focusing on their hosting and bidding of major sports events over a rolling 12-month period, six years in the past and six years in the future. Each event is given a GSI Event Rating.
“It is great to see that Copenhagen has managed to maintain its position as the 8th best sport city in the world. It is not an easy task with so much fierce competition from much bigger destinations around the world. As an example, many of the other cities in top 10 have hosted big events like the Olympic Games; however, Copenhagen continues to punch above its weight as a sport destination and proves that it is a city with world class infrastructure in place that ensures the success of major international sport events,” says Kit Lykketoft, Director of Conventions at Wonderful Copenhagen.
While Copenhagen is set to kick off the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship this May, preparations are also in full swing for next year’s World Men’s Handball Championship 2019. Additionally, the European Football Championship 2020 have chosen the Danish Capital as one of the 13 European host cities for the jubilee championship.
Copenhagen is the only Scandinavian city at the top of the list, where Stockholm and Oslo can be found on a 73rd and 130th place respectively.
